Football Supporters Europe (FSE), Fans’ Embassies, Koordinationsstelle Fanprojekte (KOS), UEFA, the DFB, the German Ministry of Interior, and other key tournament stakeholders gathered in Berlin on 8th and 9th November to reflect on and discuss the successes and challenges of UEFA EURO 2024.
Through panel sessions and open discussions, the Fans’ Embassies shared their experiences and feedback on a broad range of topics, including ticketing, transportation, safety, and security, with the tournament organisers and the German public authorities.
This year’s tournament set new standards for dialogue with supporters. While every tournament has its challenges, and UEFA EURO 2024 was no exception, many issues that arose between the first and final matches were resolved or improved through cooperation and communication between FSE, Fans’ Embassies, and decision-makers on the ground.
Fifteen of the 24 competing nations had a Fans’ Embassy active in Germany during the summer, with 43 of the 51 total matches having at least one Fans’ Embassy present. In addition to their contributions to pre-tournament meetings with FSE, their on-the-ground advice and support made a significantly positive impact on the organisation of the tournament.
Preparation for future tournaments was also a key topic of discussion, with representatives from the host nations of the next men’s European Championship in 2028 in attendance to hear first-hand from fans.
Following the meeting, FSE’s Executive Director Ronan Evain commented: “This tournament was a breakthrough in terms of ensuring supporters were listened to in the planning and running of UEFA EURO 2024, with a considerable role played by FSE’s member Fans’ Embassies.
“With three major tournaments on the horizon – WEURO 2025, World Cup 2026, and EURO 2028 – we’re already working to create channels for supporters to be heard. EURO 2024 has demonstrated that major tournaments are better for all stakeholders when fans are listened to.”
